Rapid Population Aging Will Raise Critical Challenges for Asian Governments

Responding to the challenges posed by a rapidly aging population will be one of the most difficult tasks for Asian governments in the first half of this century, says a report released today by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Indian National Science Academy, Indonesian Academy of Sciences, U.S. National Academy of Sciences, and the Science Council of Japan.

The report, which discusses these challenges and identifies needed research to help policymakers better respond to them, was released at the opening of an international conference on aging in Asia hosted by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in Beijing.

SE Asia Struggling With Inflows and Inflation

South East Asia is struggling to manage large capital inflows and inflationary pressures, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) warns .

Despite a remarkable recovery, uncertainty remains over South-east Asia’s near-term prospects. Overall, the strong recovery seen in the region in the first half of this year is gradually losing momentum.

On a country level, however, the economic recovery has developed in very different ways.

Abuses on Indian, Bangladeshi Border

Border Guards Kill Cattle Wranglers, Harass Civilians

Both Bangladesh and India have deployed guards to the border between West Bengal and Bangladesh to prevent illegal activities like smuggling and trafficking.  But a new report reveals that these guards have killed hundreds of citizens, using excessive force.

Both sides have committed offenses, but Indian soldiers have used fatal tactics much more regularly. Over the past decade, Indian border guards have killed more than 900 Bangladeshis as they crossed into Indian territory. The Bangladeshis often are rustling cattle – lucrative, but illegal – to supplement their meager incomes as farmers or laborers.

NGO in Philippines pushes for Marijuana Legalization

In the Philippines, the Philippine Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (Pormal), a non-government organization (NGO), is calling for the decriminalization of marijuana, citing the drug’s medicinal benefits, according to a report by Philippine news agency GMA News
